I'm so excited! My website's online! But how will people know it is there?
It's always exciting when a website goes "live." But does anyone else know about it? Search engines and directories do not actually know about your website unless you tell them. (Warning: you do not have to pay anyone to submit your sites to search engines, though many advertisers make it sound as if that were the case.) It is not, in fact, necessary to submit your site to "thousands" of search engines, as many advertisers claim. Most of these are tiny regional or topical engines that will not be relevant to your site. Statistics show that nearly all websites are found through the top ten search engines, such as Alta Vista, Yahoo!, etc.
