According to a study by Smerep, stress is the number one reason students drink alcohol. But they also use the drink to feel more comfortable... and experience "the pleasure of drunkenness." This short review is made by Max Rasmussen from wowessays.

It's no secret that students are stressed. 40% of them even feel stressed on a daily basis. Nearly one French student out of ten turns to antidepressants when a good part of them is ready to use less conventional means... To relax, students still have as much recourse to drinking and cannabis. Although tobacco consumption has tended to fall, it is still a problem with one student smoker in four, according to Smerep.

Drinking to relieve the pressure
On average, young people consume their first glasses of alcohol at the age of 15. Despite the danger of excessive consumption, two out of five students say they drink more regularly than before. The drink of choice for 18-27-year-olds is undoubtedly beer, followed by wine, cocktails, and finally strong alcohol (vodka, whisky). Excesses are almost always synonymous with parties: most young people admit to drinking during the party (51%), but for others, it is usual to join the majority of the group having already drunk (22%). This "before" phenomenon is particularly popular with students who go out to clubs or bars and who want to be in a state of mind without spending too much money.

If stress is the first reason why students drink alcohol (54%), many also do it to be more comfortable socially (42%) and a good number just to feel the pleasure of drunkenness (28%). Less numerous but just as worrying: 7% of young people say they drink "out of habit" under the age of thirty! However, according to the consequences described by Smerep, excessive drinking is far from being a pleasure: 57% of students who drink speak of nausea, vomiting, and headaches, 31% speak of blackouts and absences, 24% mention a feeling of sadness. More rare but existing: alcohol exacerbates aggressiveness in 9% of young people and has already led 3% of them to an alcoholic coma.

Tobacco, medication, and other drugs: 30% of students use them
Alcohol is not the only drug that seduces students. More addictive, illegal drugs concern 1 out of 3 students. Among them, cannabis is by far the most attractive to young people. The issue of marijuana is still an open one, and you can find essays against legalization and why marijuanas should be legal essay. Cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin concern less than 5% of the student population. 20% of those surveyed believe that cannabis is more dangerous than alcohol.

On the other hand, tobacco continues to attract one out of four young people despite numerous awareness campaigns and a sharp increase in prices. If some student smokers want to give up this habit, it is above all to preserve their health (63%), for financial reasons (42%) and, finally, for aesthetic reasons: yellowing teeth, a discolored complexion, and deteriorating breath discourage some of them (31%). Those who have managed to distance themselves from the addiction have done so, for the vast majority, alone (78%). Electronic cigarettes and gum are mentioned but represent a very small number of young people (less than 5%).
