Despite being strewn with problems in its development, the film was formally praised by many (including one Hayao Miyazaki) for rejecting established anime motifs of the time, and commended by critic, Roger Ebert, for its “visually sensational” aesthetic as well as its attempt to bring together a world plagued by alienation and progressive isolation.
